Report: How the Newcastle owners feel about Eddie Howe possibly becoming England manager

For many Newcastle United fans, Eddie Howe is the man to take the club to the top.

He has done a brilliant job since his arrival at St James’ Park, with the Newcastle United owners pulling off a masterstroke when they decided that Eddie Howe should be Steve Bruce’s replacement. Although they did initially want Unai Emery

But his rejection gave Howe a chance, and it is one he has grasped. From guiding the club to safety to getting to a Wembley final, followed by bringing Champions League nights back to Tyneside – it has been a remarkable few years as Newcastle United manager.

Sure, there were challenges last season, which led to some questions coming Howe’s way. But he answered them, and can be happy with what Newcastle achieved despite missing out on Europe.

His stock as a manager is higher than ever, which is why he is attracting some rather admiring glances.

Eddie Howe is a wanted man

With domestic football on hold, the international game is set to take centre stage. The Euros and Copa America are due to kick off, with Newcastle stars Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier hoping to bring football home for England.

They are being managed by Gareth Southgate, who could be going into his final tournament as England boss. He has suggested that he could step down as manager if the Three Lions fail to win the Euros, which would mean the FA need to find a replacement.

And, according to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is at the top of their list of targets.

They add that the FA have been impressed with the way that Howe has handled off the pitch issues at St James’ Park, having fielded questions about the club’s controversial ownership.

Of course, they will also admire his incredible ability as a manager, having enjoyed a lot of success with a core of English players at Newcastle.

How Newcastle’s owners feel about England wanting Eddie Howe

Assuming the opportunity does come his way, the lure of being England manager will surely be very tempting for Howe. It is the biggest job in the country, and would give him the chance to work with a ‘golden generation’ of talent that will be contenders to win the 2026 World Cup.

However, he also has something special going on at Newcastle United, where he is well placed to become the man that ends the club’s incredibly agonising trophy drought.

It would be a disaster to lose him, but the Northern Echo report that the Toon owners are of the belief that they can keep the 46-year-old.

They report that the Newcastle United owners have always been confident that Howe would turn down the England job if it was offered to him in favour of remaining at St James’ Park.

That would be a tough call, even if as Newcastle United fans we believe the Toon job is the biggest of them all.

But a move into international football would be a change of pace for Howe, and one that he might not necessarily enjoy. He has always spoke about how much he loves being on the training pitch and working to make his players better. There is less of that at international level, with nations only getting together every few months to play a couple of games outside of major tournaments.

That could play into Newcastle’s hands, and the hierarchy will be watching closely to see how Southgate’s Three Lions perform at Euro 2024.
