What Weston McKennie is demanding from Aston Villa amid hold-up in Douglas Luiz transfer swap

Aston Villa are hoping to offload Douglas Luiz in the coming days to alleviate PSR concerns although, Weston McKennie is holding up the transfer.

As June 30th fast approaches, Aston Villa will be eager to offload several talents to get their financial books in order.

Due to Villa’s PSR concerns, Unai Emery and Monchi look set to part ways with some of the club’s best talents, including Douglas Luiz and Jhon Duran.

For Luiz, a move to Juventus as part of a swap deal with Samuel Iling-Junior and Weston McKennie is on the horizon although, activity has slowed slightly.

The salary that Weston McKennie is demanding from Aston Villa

Opposing reports have circulated this week regarding McKennie’s stance on being part of Luiz’s transfer.

Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that the United States international had stalled the move due to not reaching a definitive agreement with Villa.

To counter Di Marzio’s report, Fabrizio Romano said that the issue with McKennie was his exit conditions with Juventus and not with Villa.

Reports coming out of Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, now claim that the midfielder is demanding a high salary from the Premier League side.

The report explains that McKennie desires to be paid as a ‘top player’ at Villa and will request a pay rise on his current salary in Turin.

As per Capology, the 25-year-old earns £2.7m-a-year at Juventus, with reports speculating that the player would be ‘looking’ to double his earnings at Villa as he looks to ‘make the most he can’ out of the move.

How McKennie’s wage demands would compare to other Villa players

Based on speculation, McKennie would be looking at earning a salary around the £5m-a-year mark at Villa.

Such salary would place him alongside the likes of Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings in Villa’s wage bill, as the duo earn a reported £5.2m-a-year in wages.

The breakdown of such wage works out at around £100k-a-week, which would indeed double McKennie’s current wage of £53k-a-week.

Given Villa’s current war with PSR, Monchi and Emery are expected to do what they can to get the deal over the line to offload Luiz although, McKennie’s wage demands won’t be appreciated.

Part of Villa’s PSR concerns come from the wage bill, hence rumours linking high-earners such as Lucas Digne and Diego Carlos with moves away from the club.

With every other part of the deal seemingly ready to go, there will be hope that a solution can be found soon to get the transfer over the line.
