Report: Tottenham actually tried to sign Championship ‘wonderkid’ last year, they could try again now

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly attempted to sign a talented Championship youngster before he signed his first professional contract last year.

A busy summer transfer window awaits Ange Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange as Spurs look to build on a fifth-place finish last season.

Tottenham have wasted no time when it comes to offloading players, with Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic and Japhet Tanganga all heading out the door on free transfers.

Spurs are yet to bolster Postecoglou’s squad with fresh additions though, despite extending Timo Werner’s loan deal by a further year.

As well as reinforcements in midfield and upfront, Tottenham could be in the market for a new right-back as Emerson Royal nears a switch to AC Milan.

While Monaco’s Vanderson remains an option for Spurs, Leeds United’s Archie Gray also has admirers in north London.

And with the Lilywhites weighing up a move for the talented 18-year-old, The Athletic has shared an update on Tottenham’s long-standing interest in the full-back.

Tottenham tried to sign Archie Gray last year

According to The Athletic, Gray has admirers at Tottenham and has been tracked ‘extensively’ by the club.

Spurs also tried to sign Gray back in March last year just before the youngster signed his first professional contract with Leeds.

It’s noted that while Tottenham are interested in the Englishman, there will be plenty of competition for his signature.

Tottenham move may be too soon for Gray

Despite an excellent breakthrough season at Elland Road, a switch to north London may not be in the player’s best interest right now.

Labelled a ‘wonderkid’, Gray racked up 52 appearances under Daniel Farke last term, mainly operating at right-back.

The Whites starlet would be unlikely to play as regularly should he secure a move to Spurs this summer.

With that being said, Tottenham could look at signing Gray and sending him back on loan to Leeds, much like they did with Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr.
