Champions League club now want to hand Chelsea target £101m release clause - journalist

Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion is attracting interest from Chelsea.

In fact, it has been reported that Chelsea have already had a bid for Samu Omorodion rejected by Atletico Madrid.

The Blues are trying to sign a new centre-forward this summer and have also looked at signing Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.

However, with little progress being made there, they now look to have turned to Omorodion.

The 20-year-old spent last season out on loan at Alaves, where he scored eight goals in 34 appearances in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid want Samu Omorodion to stay amid Chelsea interest

Atletico will not let Omorodion leave without a fight it seems.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Spanish giants want to keep hold of the Spaniard this summer after turning down a €40m (£33.7m) offer from Chelsea.

Jacobs has also claimed that Atletico want Omorodion to sign a new contract with a €120m (£101m) release clause as they look to fend off Chelsea’s advances for their player.

It is hard to imagine the Blues paying anything close to that for a 20-year-old striker who only scored eight league goals last season, so that should do the trick for Atletico.

Samu Omorodion’s stats

In total, Omorodion made 21 starts and 13 substitute appearances in La Liga last season.

According to WhoScored, he took the most shots (64) in Alaves’ squad.

His xG was 12.94, meaning that he actually should have scored more than eight goals in that campaign. His xG difference, then, was -4.94.

The above is a bit concerning if you are Chelsea, with Nicolas Jackson’s xG difference being -4.66.

Given how much Atletico seem to value the Spaniard, though, it would be a surprise if Chelsea went on to sign him this summer.

Considering that Omorodion is still a young striker who missed quite a few good chances last season, they probably should not.
