Intelligence identifies Russians who shot four Ukrainian POWs in Zaporizhzhya Oblast

The execution was recorded on video, showing four unarmed soldiers with raised hands surrendering, being forced to lie face down, and then shot at close range by Russian forces.

Russian soldiers from the 70th Motor Rifle Regiment (unit 71718) of the 42nd Motor Rifle Division of the 58th Combined Arms Army, based in Chechnya, carried out the execution, HUR reported.

At the time, the regiment was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Yuri Abayev (call sign "Bison"), born Dec. 10, 1990. Others involved in the war crime include:

  • Captain Dmitry Nagorny, born Nov. 21, 1995, the 2nd Battalion commander
  • Senior Lieutenant Temirlan Abutalimov, born May 2, 1997, the 1st Assault Company commander
  • Lieutenant Zaur Bekov, born July 16, 1997, the 3rd Assault Company commander
  • Senior Lieutenant Yusup Imagaliev, born July 18, 1999, the 6th Assault Company commander

These individuals might be linked to other killings of unarmed soldiers in May 2024, as intercepted communications between the soldiers and the command of the 70th Regiment contained orders to execute Ukrainian prisoners, HUR stated.

The execution of Ukrainian prisoners near Robotyne in May 2024 wasn't previously reported. However, it is known that in February 2024, the Russians shot three Ukrainian soldiers near Robotyne, with a video of the incident circulating online. The deceased were soldiers from the Spartan 3rd Operational Brigade of Ukraine's National Guard, according to the DeepState monitoring group.
