'The truth is...': European trophy winner explains why he once rejected the Sheffield Wednesday job

David Moyes has explained why he rejected the chance to join Sheffield Wednesday ‘years ago’.

Sheffield Wednesday have had nine managers since Moyes was sacked by Manchester United in 2014.

The coach had enjoyed a highly successful eleven year stint at Everton before he moved to Old Trafford, with Sir Alex Ferguson eager to see his fellow Scot take up the job following his departure.

Moyes’ time at United ended quickly and miserably, and he has since gone onto work at Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham.

Moyes was sacked within a year in Spain before relegating the Black Cats to the Championship, however he went onto guide the Irons to Europa Conference League glory.

The 61-year-old has had a mixed bag during his career, but it was apparently once enough to tempt Sheffield Wednesday into making him an offer.

Sir Alex urged Moyes not to join Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking on The Rest is Footballpodcast, Moyes has explained why Sir Alex once told him to turn down a move to Hillsborough.

He said: “The truth is, I used to go Alex quite a lot for advice – Alex and Walter Smith. Over my career I’d been getting offered loads of jobs, and I’d go to Alex and ask him what he thought.

“Years ago I got offered the Sheffield Wednesday job, and different jobs. And I would go to Alex and he’d say, ‘you can’t do that because of him, him and him. He was like a mentor.

“I met Sheffield Wednesday and thought, ‘should I, shouldn’t I?’. I remember I phoned Sir Alex (Ferguson) and asked if I could see him. Sir Alex was so knowledgeable. He went through all the players and said to me ‘no David, I don’t think it’s that good a job’.”

Would he have been a risk worth taking?

While it is unclear when Moyes was offered the job in Yorkshire, it surely couldn’t have been a much worse appointment than what Dejphon Chansiri has otherwise brought to the club.

However, going for the ‘big names’ such as Steve Bruce and Tony Pulis has previously proven to be a risk, but perhaps one worth taking.

Neither the Owls nor Moyes will be too fussed that the move never materialised though, with both looking in a much better place now.
