Report: Newcastle optimistic of resolution in talks to sign 'outstanding' £20m player before pre-season

Newcastle United appear to remain optimistic that they could secure their second signing of the summer transfer window before pre-season begins, despite talks currently being at an impasse.

The Magpies have wasted little time when it comes to strengthening their ranks in this window, with Eddie Howe’s men already adding Lloyd Kelly to their squad following the end of his contract at Bournemouth.

It would appear that signing a new goalkeeper is their next priority, with James Trafford the player that Newcastle hope to bring to St James’ Park to rival Nick Pope.

The Northern Echo reports that the Magpies have made a bid worth up to £16 million for the Burnley goalkeeper, with much of that fee coming in add-ons. The Clarets however, want £20 million for the 21-year-old, as Manchester City will be due a portion of the fee.

It is claimed that talks are currently at a stalemate, but the report suggests that Newcastle sources believe that a resolution will be found before the start of pre-season.

Trafford is not the only goalkeeper on Newcastle’s radar, with Pope enduring a difficult time with injuries since arriving at the club.

Magpies interested in another Premier League player

There had been reports that Newcastle would be ready to target Aaron Ramsdale again should they fail to agree a fee with Burnley for Trafford. And Ramsdale does remain at Arsenal at this early stage of the summer.

Newcastle have clearly had to be mindful of their spending over the last couple of years, despite the wealth of those behind the scenes on Tyneside, so it is not entirely surprising that they are not meeting Burnley’s asking price, with the Championship side looking for the large majority of the fee up front.

Trafford looks to be an ‘outstanding‘ talent with a very bright future, but Newcastle saw last season that they need further depth in a number of areas, so overspending on one player may not work for them in this window.

But it is positive that Newcastle do seemingly see light at the end of the tunnel.
