‘It’s time’: Charlie Adam reckons £225k-a-week Man City player needs to ‘step up’ for his country at Euro 2024

Charlie Adam has urged one Manchester City player to step up for his country during the Euros.

14 names from Pep Guardiola’s squad were selected to represent their countries in the 2024 European Championship in Germany, which is more than any other Premier League club.

Now that the second round of group-stage fixtures have started, a significant number of the 14 City players have seen some action in the tournament.

However, one particular City star has found himself being called upon to give more on the pitch for his country after having an impressive domestic season with the Manchester club.

Charlie Adam wants Phil Foden to replicate Man City form at the Euros

Appearing in a recent episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Adam had this to say about Phil Foden and what he wants to see from the City star throughout the remainder of the tournament.

He said: “I think Foden has to actually go and show everybody why he’s a top player.

“I think there’s a wee, ultimately within a group and within a team, there’s always a wee bit of ego coming in. Bellingham at the moment has got it. He’s playing as high as he can. The best level he’s probably ever played at, and he’s bringing that into the tournament.

“I think it’s time for Foden to go and step up and show, like he did for Man City last year and winning another Player of the Year and winning the Premier League, he stepped up last year, I think he now needs to go and step up for England.”

Foden has the talent to be a star performer for England in the Euros

In England’s 1-0 win over Serbia, the £225k-a-week midfielder completed the full 90 minutes in a left-wing position, which is a role that he didn’t appear in too often for City last season.

In fact, Gabby Agbonlahor recently urged Gareth Southgate to use the six-time Premier League champion in an attacking-midfield role rather than out wide.

However, Foden only made one key pass in the match and didn’t register even one shot at goal or dribble.

In 53 appearances across all competitions last season, the 24-year-old found the back of the net 27 times and supplied 12 assists.

Even though it may be unfair to criticise Foden after just one game where he played in a position that isn’t ideal for him, we understand why Adam thinks the City star has what it takes to step up and deliver for his country what he has been delivering for his club in recent months.
