'I can say': Fabrizio Romano says Man United are considering surprise move to sign 'exceptional' West Ham player

Manchester United are internally discussing a move to sign one of West Ham United’s most important players this summer.

The Irons are about to begin a new era under Julen Lopetegui, who has replaced David Moyes as the club’s new manager.

There is a lot of excitement around the London Stadium and rightly so. The Spaniard will bring an attractive style of football to the club, which is something that hasn’t been there at West Ham for a few years now.

All eyes are currently on the transfer market to see who Lopetegui will sign, but there is a small chance that they could receive an offer from Manchester United for one of their key players.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who has shared the latest on the situation.

Fabrizio Romano says Manchester United are considering move for West Ham’s Edson Alvarez

West Ham signed Edson Alvarez from Ajax in the summer of 2023.

The Mexico international had an impressive debut season in East London. Everybody at the club admires him and he has become a popular figure there.

Alvarez was brought in as a replacement for Declan Rice before the start of the 2023/24 campaign, and although he isn’t quite on the same level as the Arsenal man, he showed his quality on multiple occasions.

We are keen to see how the ‘exceptional‘ Alvarez would fit in at West Ham under Lopetegui, but there is now a chance that he may not even play under the new Irons boss.

That’s because Manchester United are internally discussing a move to sign the talented Mexican defender in this summer’s transfer window, claims Romano.

Alvarez and Erik ten Hag know each other very well having worked together at Ajax. With the Dutchman set to stay at Old Trafford, any move for the West Ham man will probably be driven by him.

Romano said on Playback: “What I can say on this is that one of the names, one of the options – again, let me be clear, he’s an option, it’s an internal discussion, it’s not a negotiation club to club, there is still no bid, it’s not something that’s happening today, tonight tomorrow or this week, it’s something I would say one to watch in the summer transfer window – is the Mexico captain and West Ham midfielder, Edson Alvarez.

“Edson Alvarez is a player that Erik ten Hag knows so well because they worked together at Ajax. He is a player who was already on Manchester United’s shortlist one year ago, appreciated by people in the scouting. It was impossible to sign Edson Alvarez one year ago because West Ham invested big money on him.

“Also, for this summer, it’s not an easy deal because West Ham keep considering Edson Alvarez as a really important player. But, it’s one of the options they started considering internally in case they want to bring in a new midfielder.

“It’s a possibility, it’s not a done deal, it’s not a negotiation, but it’s one of the names they are considering for holding midfielder at Manchester United.”

West Ham fans have nothing to worry about

Any interest in your club’s key players is always a concern, but West Ham fans shouldn’t be too worried about Manchester United eyeing a move for Alvarez.

Yes, there is a chance that the Mexican would want to make the jump to Old Trafford, but the Hammers are in a very strong position with respect to his contract.

Alvarez has been tied down to a deal until the summer of 2028. After signing him for £35.4 million in 2023 (Sky Sports), they are in a position where they can demand a fortune for him.

That could price Manchester United out of a move this summer, which is why, as things stand, we don’t expect this move to go through.

However, football is a funny game and stranger things have happened over the years.
