'Pushback': Newcastle's backroom staff are annoyed after hearing who the club could sell this summer - journalist

Newcastle United need to sell, but who goes remains to be seen.

There are plenty of candidates to depart, with the Magpies under pressure to move someone on before June 30th due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

However, there are mitigating circumstances regarding every player that Newcastle United could possibly sell.

For example, the hierarchy believe it is time to sell Callum Wilson, but Eddie Howe is keen to keep him. On top of that, he has warned that signing a replacement will be very expensive.

Then you have got Miguel Almiron, who the club will listen to offers for. However, it has been suggested that he would like to stay, having turned down the chance to move to Saudi Arabia in January.

And there is Bruno Guimaraes, who no one at Newcastle wants to see leave. But there is a chance he could go, with his £100million release clause very much active. And if someone did come in with a £100million offer, it would put the Magpies in an excellent position to reinvest. But that comes with the caveat that you suddenly need to replace a world class player.

Yankuba Minteh’s Newcastle future is up in the air

Away from the first team stars, there is Yankuba Minteh. There is so much buzz surrounding the 19-year-old winger after his loan spell with Feyenoord, but there is now a chance he may never play for Newcastle United.

That is because the Magpies are willing to sell Minteh this summer, valuing him at £40million. There are plenty of clubs interested in the Gambia international, one of which is Borussia Dortmund, which has presented Newcastle with an opportunity to cash in on a player who has never actually kicked a ball inside St James’ Park.

In terms of PSR, a departure makes sense. But that is the only way in which it makes sense.

How some Newcastle staff feel about selling Yankuba Minteh

For many Newcastle United fans, it would be devastating to see the club cash in on Minteh. And that is a view shared by some people within the club according to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about the teenager’s Toon future.

“If a good enough offer comes it, it will clearly look good on the spreadsheet in terms of profit and sustainability,” he said.

“I think that’s the way they are looking at it.

“I understand that there has been quite a lot of pushback within some areas of the backroom staff. They really want to give him a go after such an impressive loan spell at Feyenoord.

“In an ideal world, I think Eddie Howe would like to give him a chance, but it is not an ideal world that we are living in with profit and sustainability.

“Will someone pay £40million for him? It is going to be a push to get that amount. If a good enough offer comes in, I think they will sell, but there is quite a few people at the club who would at least like Eddie Howe to have a look at him this summer.”

Newcastle must push to keep Minteh

From a financial perspective, getting £40million for a player who cost £6million just 12 months earlier is a no-brainer.

But if someone is willing to pay that much for Minteh, it should tell Newcastle that they are making a mistake. He is an immensely talented attacker with a huge amount of potential, and someone who could develop into a star at St James’ Park.

During a summer in which Newcastle are aiming to sign a winger, it seems crazy to think they are actually looking to sell someone who could develop into exactly what they are looking for.

Of course, the big problem is PSR, and if Minteh is the only player they can realistically sell then he might have to go. But the fear will be that it is a decision that the Magpies live to regret, with some people behind the scenes at St James’ Park eager for Minteh to stay.
