Chelsea should absolutely sign £34m Euro 2024 star to replace Ian Maatsen - opinion

It has been reported that Chelsea are very close to making their first big sale of the summer.

Multiple sources have stated that the club have agreed a deal with fellow Premier League side Aston Villa for the signing of Ian Maatsen, providing personal terms can be agreed.

It has been claimed from Germany that he would actually ideally prefer a move to Borussia Dortmund after spending the second half of last season on loan there.

He even featured in a Champions League final there, however this move does provide him the opportunity to play in that competition again next season.

With Chelsea parting ways with a left-back, talk will quickly turn to potential players they could bring in to replace him and potentially make an impact straight away.

If those at the club have been watching the start of Euro 2024, there is a clear candidate that they should absolutely be looking at signing.

Chelsea have to replace Maatsen with Riccardo Calafiori

In a narrow Italy win, one player who stood out from the rest was Riccardo Calafiori, who enjoyed a stellar domestic campaign with Bologna last season.

It was reported thatthe Blues had scouts at their victory over Albania to watch him, and they would have been delighted with what they had seen.

It has been claimed that a deal could be available for a fee of around £34m, which would actually be less than what they are set to recieve for Maatsen, who looked very much out of the picture at Stamford Bridge.

It is fair to say that there is not total confidence in many supporters to go into the next season with Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella, despite the fact the latter enjoyed a good start to life at Euro 2024.

If they are to look to bring in another option to play in that kind of position, there is no one better out there than Calafiori right now.
