Report: Arsenal now close to signing £60m striker who outscored Erling Haaland last season

Arsenal are closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners ran Manchester City close for the Premier League title last season but ultimately missed out by just two points.

Now, the onus will be on sporting director Edu to make two or three quality additions in the market, including a prolific number nine.

That is an area which desperately needs addressing and it seems the club are about to do just that.

Arsenal close to signing Viktor Gyokeres

According to Sporting outlet Leonino, Arsenal are very close to signing Viktor Gyokeres.

The report further notes that only financial details are now being discussed, indicating that broad terms seem to be agreed.

Gyokeres only made the switch to Sporting last July, however, after netting a staggering 43 goals across all competitions, he’s been constantly linked with a move away this summer.

Chelsea have been heavily mooted as a potential destination, but if this report is to be believed, Arsenal have won the race to land his signature.

The cost of Viktor Gyokeres

At this stage, it is not yet known how much Arsenal have agreed to pay Sporting for the Sweden international.

Though, TBR ran a story on Tuesday which revealed they were only willing to go up to £60m, which suggests the deal is somewhere close to that fee.

Gyokeres, who outscored Erling Haaland last season, is under contract until 2028, so Sporting hold all the cards in negotiations.

That said, it seems unlikely a deal has been completed for anything less than £60m, with even that fee much lower than his £85m release clause.

A telling few days await Arsenal, as more details around this major transfer begin to emerge.
