'Wonderful' Newcastle United player suffered a broken nose on Wednesday

The 2023/24 season is over, but Newcastle United’s injury curse continues.

The Magpies had a crazy amount of injury problems last season, and it had a massively negative impact on Eddie Howe’s team. Had it not been for their injury crisis, Newcastle United may have been much more successful.

Now Newcastle are preparing for the 2024/25 season, and know that they will start the new Premier League campaign at home to Southampton.

By then, Howe should almost have a fully fit squad, with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman the only two players who may still be out inured. Sandro Tonali will also be unavailable, with the 24-year-old not due to return in the Premier League until Newcastle’s third game against Tottenham Hotspur.

With fewer fixtures to deal with, Newcastle will hope to avoid as many fitness problems. But even though the Magpies’ season came to an end last month, they are still picking up injuries.

Fabian Schar suffers fresh injury at Euro 2024

He has played in both of Switzerland’s games so far, and put in a ‘wonderful‘ performance as they beat Hungary 3-1 in their opening game.

Switzerland’s second match was much tougher, as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Scotland. It was a challenging game, and one that Fabian Schar is still feeling the effects of.

The 32-year-old went down in the first half with a head injury, having been involved in a coming together with Anthony Ralston. When Schar got to his feet, it emerged that he had suffered a nosebleed from his whack to the face.

However, Schar admitted after the game that it was more than that.

“My nose is broken,” he told Blue News.

“Now it is broken, it cannot break any further.”

Newcastle defender nearly got an own goal too

It was a pretty grim night for Schar, who was initially credited with an own goal. Scotland took the lead in the 13th minute, with the Newcastle defender deflecting Scott McTominay’s shot into the net.

It was initially given as an own goal, but it has now been awarded to the Manchester United midfielder.

Now Schar will hope to turn his attention to the final group game against Germany, where he may end up wearing a mask to protect his broken nose. One thing is for sure – given how tough Schar is, you have to imagine he will continue playing for his country in spite of this injury.

He is a massively resilient player, as Newcastle saw during the 2023/24 season. Schar was one of the Magpies’ most reliable players, featuring in 47 out of a possible 51 games.

Switzerland play their final group game on Sunday, and are well placed to advance to the knockout stages of the competition having already picked up four points.
