U.S. Department of State responds to Putin’s remarks on supplying weapons to North Korea

“Of course, it will destabilize the Korean Peninsula and potentially lead to the fact of possible violation of UN Security Council resolutions, that Russia itself has supported, depending on the type of weapons they provide,” he said.

The United States will continue to work with allies in the region: South Korea, Japan and others to respond to the threat posed by North Korea.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said on June 20 that he “does not rule out” arms supply to North Korea, where he signed a mutual defense treaty this week.

“We reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world,” Putin said.

“Considering our agreements with North Korea, I don’t rule it out that possibility either.”

Putin’s visit to North Korea

Putin arrived in Pyongyang on June 18 to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, marking his first visit to the North Korean capital since 2000.

White House spokesman John Kirby expressed concern about the deepening relations between Russia and North Korea, particularly regarding its impact on the war in Ukraine and security on the Korean Peninsula.

The Pentagon also stated that the increased cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a cause for concern.
