'Added to the list': Romano says PSG are now interested in £28m Newcastle United target

Newcastle United will have eyes on a lot of players at Euro 2024, but one player they have been linked with is now attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

It feels like PSG are never far away from Newcastle United in the transfer market, and they are one of the clubs that has been interested in signing Bruno Guimaraes. However, time is running out for them to activate his £100million release clause.

And, of course, there was the unforgettable Hugo Ekitike saga from the summer of 2022. PSG won that race, but Newcastle will not complain. They signed Alexander Isak instead, who is being talked up as a world class talent. As for Ekitike, his PSG move was a disaster, and he is now with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Newcastle United linked with Lutsharel Geertruida

Now Newcastle and PSG are targeting the same player yet again, although it feels unlikely that this will develop into a summer saga.

It was reported earlier this month that the Magpies are one of multiple Premier League clubs that are interested in Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

The 23-year-old, who is with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024, is available for less than £28million, as he heads into the final year of his Feyenoord contract.

Geertruida is not going to sign an extension with the Rotterdam club, and is set to decide his future after the Euros.

Fabrizio Romano says PSG are now keen

Newcastle are one of the clubs in the mix for his signature, but now Fabrizio Romano believes that PSG have entered the conversation.

He has stated on X that the Ligue 1 champions have added Geertruida to their list of summer targets, as they plan to add a centre-back to their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Romano notes that Edmond Tapsoba is also on PSG’s radar – the Bayer Leverkusen defender who was linked with Newcastle last summer.

Newcastle moving for Geertruida feels unlikely

With PSG joining a growing queue for Geertruida, it could be difficult for the Magpies to win this race.

However, in truth, it would be a real surprise if Newcastle were genuine contenders for the Dutchman.

While Romano believes that PSG are looking at him as a centre-back option, he plays most of his football at right-back. That is a position that Newcastle are well stocked in, with Tino Livramento poised to take Kieran Trippier’s place when the time comes.

Eddie Howe is in the market for a right-sided centre-back, which is a role Geertruida can fill, but you have to imagine that Newcastle will go for a more conventional centre-back when the time comes to make a move. For example, Marc Guehi is a much more natural fit, even if he will likely be out of Newcastle’s reach.

One thing that could change Newcastle’s approach to Geertruida is Trippier’s future, with the 33-year-old a candidate to leave St James’ Park this summer. He is heading into the final year of his contract, which means the club may decide to move him on with a view to PSR.
