Donald Sutherland’s The Simpsons role was ‘one of the best’

The actor best known for such classic movies as Don’t Look Now, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, and also the much more recent The Hunger Games blockbusters starred in The Simpsons season 7 episode 16, Lisa The Iconoclast.

It’s generally agreed upon that seasons 1 to 10 make up the show’s golden age, and this episode is regularly cited as a highlight.

The installment follows Lisa as she writes an essay on Springfield founder Jebediah Springfield. However, after embarking on her research, she discovers the man had a controversial past as a ruthless pirate.

She butts heads with Hollis Hurlbut, the curator of the historical society’s museum. A group of fans are only just catching on to the fact Donald voiced the memorable guest character. The role was actually written for him too.

The actor delivered an assortment of iconic lines, with one of the best being: “You’re banned from this historical society. You and your children and your children’s children… for three months.” A fan recently shared a clip of the above quote, cherishing the star’s spot as “One of the great all-time guest performances.”

“Never realized this was him,” a surprised fan reacted. “A regular quote of mine.”

Donald’s The Simpsons spot seriously brings out the nostalgia

As anybody who’s watched the series knows, and that really is everybody at this point, it’s difficult to stand out on a show that already has so many unforgettable and beloved characters. For lots of viewers, Donald did that, and then some.

“I know it’s not his biggest or most important role,” a fan argued, “but Donald Sutherland was one of the few Simpsons guest actors who made it feel like his character actually lived in that world.”

Another praised “In all his varied roles, my favorite remains Hollis Hurlbut.” More than a handful have also put it forth as their favorite part of his.

It really brings out the nostalgia, watching the episode back again. “Donald Sutherland appeared in my favorite Simpsons episode,” one also admitted, their very favorite. “There’s nothing he couldn’t do.”

If you’ve conquered The Simpsons, you’ve conquered the world. Rest in peace, Donald. You were tremendous.
