'Great player': Brennan Johnson says now good friends with £90k-a-week Spurs man who once really annoyed him

Tottenham Hotspur have been brought back as one since Ange Postecoglou’s appointment last summer, but it seems that there were some bridges needing to be burned.

A summer of rest has been granted for the large majority of Tottenham‘s squad with only four members of the side representing their national sides at the Euros.

With Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso also at this summer’s Copa America, a lot of Ange Postecoglou’s players will have their feet up ahead of the new season.

One of the players who may currently have his feet up on the beach is Wales international Brennan Johnson after their failure to qualify for the Euros.

The 23-year-old has been looking back on his first campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where he has formed some solid relationships with the current batch of Spurs players.

However, the Spurs winger has admitted he did not always feel too kindly towards one player at the club in particular.

Brennan Johnson says one Spurs player really frustrated him

The 2023/24 campaign marked an impressive start to life in north London for Johnson who was able to return a total of five goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.

However, the Welshman did leave a lot on the table with more big chances missed (16) than any other player at the club.

Johnson was able to spark an exciting partnership with Timo Werner with the pair able to get on the end of each other’s crosses on numerous occasions.

But it is fair to say his relationship with Richarlison did not exactly start off on the best circumstances.

When Johnson was still at Forest, the pair came together in a heated interaction as Johnson lashed out at the Brazilian for doing some keep-ups when Spurs were beating Forest.

Speaking to the club’s media tea, Johnson recalled the incident which happened at the City Ground.

“I remember this day very well. I remember we were losing and Richy came on, playing with him now I love playing with him and he’s a great player, but my head was already gone at the result, I think it was at the end of the game,” he said.

“I remember seeing him do kick ups, I was playing up front at that time, so I shouldn’t have been anywhere near coming back that far but as soon as I saw him doing the kick ups I thought my head has gone here, I’m going to have to run over and tackle and him.

“He has then passed the ball, it’s hit me, and as soon as it was a 50/50 I thought I can’t lose this! But me and him are teammates now and obviously friends, so that’s behind us!”

Richarlison awaits uncertain summer at Tottenham

Richarlison’s 2023/24 season probably saw more questions emerge about Richarlison than were answered.

The Brazilian showed a 10-game stretch in the Premier League where he returned an impressive nine goals, a return which even Harry Kane would have been proud of.

However, the 26-year-old has suffered regular injury issues that have meant he has not been able to show whether that run of form was just a flash in the pan.

With the summer window open, Spurs may well feel the need to move on from the £90k-per-week striker given his injury issues.

But the signs are there that Richarlison could offer Spurs a solid option if he is able to remain fit.
