Celtic captain Callum McGregor previews 'big chance' to play part in history this weekend

Celtic have four players involved with Scotland at EURO 2024 and they have a chance to prolong their stay in Germany.

Should the Tartan Army defeat Hungary in Stuttgart, Scotland will likely progress to the competition’s knockout stage for the first time in their history.

In turn, Callum McGregor, Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston will remain with the group for a while longer, potentially playing their part in a special achievement that would go down in Scottish folklore.

Earlier this week, Celtic captain McGregor notched an assist for Scotland in their draw against Switzerland, showing composure in the area to supply Scott McTominay for his opener.

Looking ahead, the 31-year-old has now previewed the chance to help his nation take an unprecedented step on Sunday.

Celtic captain Callum McGregor previews Hungary clash

Speaking from his international camp, McGregor lauded the character Scotland showed to give themselves a chance of progression by drawing with Switzerland this week.

He stated [Daily Mail]: “The players showed brilliant personality after the other day, a difficult day. You have to be together and come out fighting and that is exactly what we did. We arrive into the last game with a big chance.”

Later on, he previewed the test against Hungary, as he stated: “A physical side, but they can play as well. We have to bring the same energy level, same tempo and same aggression as we did against Switzerland for Sunday, and we will see where that takes us.”

You get the impression that McGregor is desperate to succeed on the national stage after another successful campaign at club level, where he helped Celtic to a domestic double despite encountering injury problems that could’ve ruled him out for the run-in.

In typical fashion, he put the team above his own predicament to recover in plenty of time. Now on the cusp of reaching unchartered territory with Scotland, expect him to fight tooth and nail against Hungary for all three points.
