'Go with him': Diogo Jota says midfielder who left Arsenal for free was better than Steven Gerrard

Diogo Jota has made a big claim about Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and a player who once played for Arsenal.

The Portugal international has rubbed shoulders with some great players over the years. From Mohamed Salah at Liverpool to Cristiano Ronaldo in the national team, he has witnessed greatness right in front of his eyes.

After naming Alexis Mac Allister as the best player in the Premier League and calling himself a better finisher than Salah, Jota has now made another big claim.

Unlike the two above, this might anger a few Liverpool fans.

Diogo Jota says Mesut Ozil was better than Steven Gerrard and one current Liverpool player

Mesut Ozil was an incredible player in his prime.

The German became one of the best playmakers in the world at Real Madrid, where he played 159 games across three seasons. He directly contributed to over 100 goals there and won three trophies, including the Spanish championship.

Then, in 2013, Ozil left the Santiago Bernabeu and joined Arsenal for a then-club-record fee. He was the first superstar signing at the Emirates Stadium.

The German was among the biggest names in the Premier League during his time at Arsenal. He played over 250 games for the Gunners and helped them win four FA Cups and two Community Shields before leaving on a free transfer in January 2021.

Ozil was absolutely incredible on his day. His vision was out of this world – he could see passes that nobody else could.

Jota appears to be a big fan of the former Arsenal man as well.

In a video on Goal, the Portuguese attacker was asked to choose between Ozil and Gerrard – the latter is an absolute legend at Liverpool.

To many people’s surprise, Jota replied: “I might have to go with Ozil!”

What could anger people even more is that Jota went on to pick Ozil ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold as well in the video below.

Ozil vs Gerrard records compared

Both Ozil and Gerrard have retired now, so comparing their records over the years is fair.

The German played for multiple clubs across four different countries over the years and he was a star everywhere. He played 696 senior games for club and country, scored 137 goals and provided 258 assists.

Ozil won 11 major trophies in his career, including the biggest prize in football – the World Cup!

Gerrard, on the other hand, played 824 games for Liverpool, LA Galaxy and England in his career. He featured in all three central midfield positions, scored 214 goals and provided 190 assists.

Like Ozil, the Liverpool icon won 11 senior trophies, the best of which was the Champions League he lifted following a remarkable comeback against AC Milan in 2005.
