'Deal imminent': Fabrizio Romano says Aston Villa are now on verge of landing 'really strong' midfielder

Aston Villa have been very busy on the transfer front in recent days and could be closing in on a number of incomings and outgoings.

For instance, the Villans have reportedly been in discussions with Everton over Lewis Dobbin, while Tim Iroegbunam is expected to go the other way.

Villa have also been in talks with Chelsea over Ian Maatsen, who is now apparently closing in on a switch to B6, while Jhon Duran has been linked with a switch to west London.

Arguably the biggest deal that has involved Unai Emery’s side in recent days has been the one that could see Douglas Luiz join Juventus.

The Villans are set to receive between €25-30million (£21-£25.5million) as part of the deal, which will also see two Juve players join the claret-and-blue side.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on that front.

Fabrizio Romano says ‘deal imminent’ between Aston Villa and Enzo Barrenechea

The transfer insider, writing on X, claims that Villa and Enzo Barrenechea are set to agree on contract terms ahead of a deal which is now “imminent”.

The Argentine midfielder will be part of the deal, which will also see Samuel Iling-Junior come to Villa, while Luiz goes the other way.

In addition, Juve will have a 10 percent sell-on clause, added Romano.

The Luiz deal initially involved Weston McKennie as well as Iling-Junior, but the United States international is no longer in the picture.

Barrenechea is also a great shout for Villa, as he is a talented young player with his whole career ahead of him, and proved himself in Serie A last season.

The 23-year-old, who can play at No. 6 and No. 8, was at Frosinone last season, and made 36 Serie A appearances.

Former Juventus U19 coach Andrea Bonatti told Tuttomercatoweb earlier this year that Barrenechea is a “really strong” player.

“He’s no different from Rodri or (Sergio) Busquets,” he said. “He’s a playmaker and can also play as a midfielder now he is much more complete.

“He can do well in the Juve context, he has the potential for that level, but he will have to confirm what he is doing and it is not easy to repeat himself.”
