'Brilliant': Rio Ferdinand says £60m Tottenham target has been his country's best defender at Euro 2024 so far

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that one player on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar heading into the summer transfer window has actually been his country’s best defender at Euro 2024.

Spurs fans will be desperate to see their side capture the imagination in the market as they look to build upon a promising first season under Ange Postecoglou.

They have plenty of quality across the squad, but Tottenham arguably need a handful of marquee signings who are going to take the side to that next level.

And when Spurs fans potentially think of defenders they would love to add to the ranks, it is likely that many would absolutely love to see a move made for Marc Guehi.

Rio Ferdinand lauds Tottenham target Marc Guehi

It was reported earlier this year that Tottenham are considering a summer bid for the £60 million-rated Guehi. And while they have three superb centre-back options in Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin, it would hardly be a surprise if some supporters would love to see them push the boat out to sign Guehi after his first two performances at Euro 2024.

England have been underwhelming in their first two games, with Guehi himself making a mistake which was nearly costly against Denmark.

But speaking on his YouTube channel about Gareth Southgate not giving fringe players enough of a chance ahead of the tournament, Rio Ferdinand suggested that he has been really impressed by the Crystal Palace star.

“There’s all these players that we still don’t know if they’re going to be good enough, but they’re here,” he said, following the draw with Denmark. “Even Guehi, Guehi’s been brilliant, been our best defender, but we didn’t know really, did we, what he was going to be like because he doesn’t get a good amount of time to play and have minutes.”

Clubs hoping to sign Crystal Palace star may now face even tougher task after news on Friday

Any side hoping to sign Guehi in this window has probably been dealt a big blow in the last few hours, with Oliver Glasner desperate to keep as many of his star players as possible this summer.

Michael Olise has reportedly decided to join Bayern Munich, so that may perhaps make it even more challenging to sign the likes of Guehi, Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze.

Having said that, the interest in Guehi from clubs like Tottenham is surely unlikely to go anywhere over the next few months, particularly as he continues to prove himself on the international stage.
