The huge wages that Newcastle target Eddie Howe thought was ideal is now set to earn - journalist

Newcastle United have had a pretty active start to the summer transfer window, though it hasn’t fully paid off.

Clearly, the signing of Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth to boost a defence to have struggled last season is a huge boost.

There is also thought to be a confidence that James Trafford will sign from Burnley as Eddie Howe bids to strengthen his options between the posts.

Still, it’s not been all positive.

Tosin Adarabioyo of course joined Chelsea over Newcastle, while they have been dealt bad news in regards to another target.

Indeed, Howe was believed to have viewed Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise as the ideal man to operate on the right-hand side of his attack, with Anthony Gordon out on the left and Alexander Isak through the middle.

However, it seems Newcastle have lost out to Bayern Munich.

Now, some reason to as to why it is Bayern who have won the race for Olise has emerged.

Michael Olise’s wages at Bayern Munich are going to be huge

According to German journalist Christian Falk on X (formerly Twitter), the forward is in line to sign a contract worth a staggering £220k-per-week with the German giants.

Given Newcastle’s highest earner is currently believed to be Bruno Guimaraes at around £160k-per-week, it’s clear that those demands would wreck the wage structure at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have reviewed wage structure – but breaking the bank isn’t easy

Newcastle are thought to have reviewed their wage structure last year to bring players in line with the success they delivered on the pitch, namely getting to the Champions League and reaching the Carabao Cup final.

Still, it’s not as simple as just paying whatever a new signing demands, as good as they may be.

Handing out huge contracts is not only an obvious financial burden but could be something that upsets dressing room harmony, with existing players perhaps seeing their noses put out of joint.

A gradual increase of wages across the board is what’s required. Not just spending money for the sake of it.
