Report: What people close to the England players are saying about Anthony Gordon at Euro 2024

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon hasn’t had a kick for England at Euro 2024 just yet.

While there is still another group game to go for the Three Lions and their place in the knockout stages is all but confirmed, it has been strange to see Newcastle’s winger not afforded a run-out.

Indeed, Phil Foden has hardly covered himself in glory despite his obvious quality at club level, with the Manchester City star not the most natural of left wingers.

Whether or not starting Gordon would instantly alleviate some of the problems England have endured during their win over Serbia and draw with Denmark is up for debate and may perhaps be too simplistic.

However, not to even get on the pitch is strange. Billed as one of the best players in the Premier League in the season just gone, it feels like England have an obvious option to replace Foden.

It was Eberechi Eze who came off the bench against Denmark, meaning Gordon and fellow in-form star Cole Palmer are yet to kick a ball in anger.

In fact, the situation is so strange that even people close to the players are questioning Southgate’s decision.

What people close to the England squad are saying about Anthony Gordon at Euro 2024

According to the Daily Mail, people close to the England squad were asking why neither Palmer nor Gordon have played yet.

It is said that individuals in the section of the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt reserved for families and close connections of the England players were asking exactly that.

Anthony Gordon surely has to start for England on Tuesday

It would take an utter calamity for England not to qualify for the round of 16, given they already have four points.

With that in mind, the Slovenia game on Tuesday surely offers Southgate the chance to tinker.

Backed to start by the likes of Jamie Carragher, there is certainly clamour for Gordon.

Southgate might be wise to listen…
