Stephen Welsh and the pre-season opportunity at Celtic

Celtic could offload several fringe players this summer as Brendan Rodgers aims to freshen up his squad ahead of the new campaign.

Central defence could be an area subject to change over the next few weeks, at least if recent reports are anything to go by.

Gustaf Lagerbielke could be set for a switch to Lecce after falling out of favour under Rodgers early into his return; meanwhile, Maik Nawrocki has attracted interest from former club Legia Warsaw, signifying there could be space to fill in the position.

In light of this, there is one figure at Celtic that could stake a bigger claim for first-team football if reinforcements aren’t swiftly acquired.

Stephen Welsh and the importance of evading injury at Celtic

Stephen Welsh endured a frustrating year last campaign due to an ankle injury and other niggles, which enabled Liam Scales to partner Cameron Carter-Vickers for the majority of the season.

The 24-year-old made 14 appearances in total last term, with his last outing against St Mirren resulting in a familiar tale as he was brought off clutching his shoulder [Transfermarkt].

Nevertheless, Celtic supporters know the solidity Welsh can provide when fully up to speed. He is accomplished on the ball, strong in the tackle and competent in the air, making him a reliable option at the club who also qualifies for a homegrown slot in European competitions.

Once pre-season rolls around, he could have the opportunity to cement his place as a trusted member of Rodgers’ backline. It has always felt like he is on the cusp of it, but fitness has been his kryptonite at crucial moments.

Now, I’m not suggesting he’d start every week, far from it. Regardless, evaluating potential outgoings, he could be given a chance to slot in against the likes of DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea. Should he impress, could there be a chance for him to move up the pecking order?

What Brendan Rodgers said about Stephen Welsh at Celtic

Welsh penned a four-year contract extension at Celtic last year, earning lofty praise from Rodgers, who is a big fan of his qualities in the backline.

He stated last August [STV News]: “I like Stephen. I took him with me one pre-season when he was a young player because I really liked him. For whatever reason he hasn’t maybe played the games but he’s a Celtic boy who wants to be at the club. I want him to be at the club.

“I said to him, ‘I can’t guarantee you how many games you are going to play. You may play 40 games in the season’. But I know he is always ready. He trains very hard every day and he came into the game, he played with composure, and he is aggressive.”

Rodgers clearly has a plan for Welsh that injuries hampered last season. If he is fully fit, the academy graduate may carve out more opportunities in 2024/25.
