Report: Tottenham interested in £42m Argentinian that Fabio Paratici wanted to sign two years ago

Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in signing an attacking midfielder who has already scored and assisted against Arsenal in the Premier League.

It’s become clear that Ange Postecoglou wants to add both goals and creativity to his forward line this summer.

Tottenham reportedly want to add a wide forward who can also excel in central positions, fitting Postecoglou’s preference for tactically versatile profiles.

Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is thought to be right at the top of Spurs’ shortlist this summer, a player with so many admirers.

Eze reportedly has a release clause of around £60m this summer, and perhaps a move to Tottenham may gather pace once his time at Euro 2024 is concluded.

But Spurs can’t simply pin all of their hopes on signing Eze, and perhaps could even buy another attacking midfielder in addition.

Richarlison could still leave Tottenham this summer, which would significantly reduce Postecoglou’s options, which would be a worry given that European football is on the horizon.

Totteham interested in signing Southampton maverick Carlos Alcaraz

With that in mind, The Sun are now reporting that Tottenham are interested in a move for Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz.

Reporting Spurs’ admiration in Sunday’s publication (23/06, page 55), Postecoglou is said to be keen on the attacking midfielder who spent last season on loan at Juventus.

Having signed for the Saints for £12m in 2023, Alcaraz was crucial to the club’s attempts to stay in the Premier League, scoring four goals and assisting two in the second half of the season.

And given he was clearly a player befitting of the top flight, Alcaraz eventually swapped the Championship for the Serie A in January, playing 10 league games for Juventus.

Returning to Southampton this summer, it remains to be seen just how Russell Martin plans to reintegrate the Argentinian back into his plans.

Juventus do have an option to buy Alcaraz for £42m as part of their loan, but perhaps seem unlikely to do so.

Fabio Paratici was interested in signing Carlos Alcaraz in 2022

With Antonio Conte in charge at the time, Tottenham were said to be interested in signing Alcaraz from Racing Club in 2022, before he moved to Southampton.

Paratici was leading the charge, with Arsenal and Real Madrid also thought to be in hot pursuit at the time.

Although that interest must have then cooled, it seems that the Argentina youth international has remained on Tottenham’s shortlist, perhaps as an Eze alternative.

At 21-years-old, Alcaraz does already have a rare ‘maverick’ quality to his game, a player who can change matches on his own.

And under the right guidance, perhaps Postecoglou in this scenario, he really could flourish into a key player for one of Europe’s stronger sides.
