'Top' Newcastle player really wants to stay this summer and is hoping for a new contract - journalist

A busy start to the summer transfer window continued for Newcastle United this weekend.

With Lloyd Kelly already through the door, Newcastle are reportedly keen to sign James Trafford from Burnley in a bid to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

Further up the field, they are said to be closing in on a deal to bring long-standing target Dominic Calvert-Lewin to St James’ Park.

As if that wasn’t enough breaking transfer news on Saturday alone, more reports emerged.

Indeed, the Daily Telegraph claimed the club had submitted a rather interesting offer for Wolves defender, Max Kilman.

It was suggested that Newcastle had offered Wolves a player-plus-cash deal to sign the defender, who they are understood to value at around £40m.

West Ham are believed to have already failed with a £25m offer but the bid from Newcastle also included a player going in the opposite direction.

Elliot Anderson is reported to have been the player the club offered to swap in part-exchange for Kilman, though Wolves rejected the bid and have no interest in that kind of arrangement.

It is obviously something of a shock given Eddie Howe reportedly had no plans to sell Anderson, a player Anthony Gordon hailed as “top”, despite the obvious PSR benefit.

Selling academy products banks clubs ‘pure profit’ on the balance sheet, which could be important when walking the FFP tightrope.

Elliot Anderson wants a new contract at Newcastle

So, it seems Wolves do not want a deal involving Anderson, at least on the current terms.

According to Craig Hope on X (formerly Twitter), the player himself has little interest in the move too.

He suggests the 21-year-old wants to stay at Newcastle and is hoping for a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2026.

Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh leaving would be a huge blow for Newcastle

Selling one of Anderson or Yankuba Minteh – who has seemingly he accepted he may need to leave – makes sense, as difficult as it may be.

Yes, there may be a raft of other players supporters would like to see sold ahead of those two but, frankly, where are the buyers?

Rather than allowing either Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes to go, cashing in on a young player looks the biggest way of helping the FFP situation.

Still, to see them both leave would be a huge blow.

Minteh has been backed to reach “world class” levels, while Howe has spoken positively about Anderson’s development.

One leaving would be bad enough, though understandable given the financial situation. Both going could rob Newcastle of some serious talents going forward.
