Journalist hints player compared to Luis Suarez could now join Palace in £16m deal after Michael Olise news

After Michael Olise decided to join Bayern Munich, Crystal Palace could now sign a top talent from South America to replace him.

The France U21 international has opted to sign for the German giants – who are triggering his £55m release clause – which means Oliver Glasner is about to lose a man who is arguably his best player at Selhurst Park.

Nevertheless, the pain Crystal Palace fans are feeling right now could soon be eased considerably, as a journalist hints that a player compared to Luis Suarez could now move to SE25…

Crystal Palace could sign Thiago Almada

A post from respected journalist César Luis Merlo now claims that Atlanta United No.10 Thiago Almada could sign for Crystal Palace.

We have described Merlo’s update as a “hint” in the title, primarily as he states that John Textor’s Eagle Football Holdings are the ones in advanced talks to sign the Argentine, and that is remains unclear whether the deal is for him to join Botafogo, Lyon or Crystal Palace.

Merlo wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “[EXCLUSIVE] Atlanta United has advanced negotiations to sell Thiago Almada to the Eagle Football Group. A transfer of around $20m (£16m) is being discussed. If it happens, it is not known if he will have a stint in Botafogo before going to Lyon or Crystal Palace.”

The South American has scored five goals – while also providing one assist – in 16 appearances for Atalanta United in the current Major League Soccer campaign.

As aforesaid, Almada – who has captained Atalanta United twice this season – has been compared to Uruguay legend Luis Suarez.

It was Liverpool.com who made the claim, writing: “His style with the ball is wild, but that’s not a negative. He is dogged, tenacious but also capable of the sublime. In fact, witnessing that, you’re reminded of a certain former Anfield hero who also originated from South America – Luis Suarez.”

John Textor situation provides doubt

While Merlo specifically names Selhurst Park as a potential destination for Almada, the current situation involving Textor makes us doubt the American is trying to sign the 23-year-old for Crystal Palace’s benefit.

The 58-year-old is currently looking to sell his 45% stake in Crystal Palace after openly admitting that his multi-club model is not exactly welcome in SE25, and holds a desire to purchase Everton.

Therefore – unless Textor is feeling especially generous and wants to hand Steve Parish a parting gift – we highly doubt the man from Missouri is looking to sign Almada for Crystal Palace.

Nevertheless, Merlo is surely aware of that situation and still named Crystal Palace, so be sure to keep an eye on this situation – anything is possible.
