‘People probably wouldn’t think’: Luke Shaw says player who left Liverpool was better at penalties than Harry Kane

Liverpool have had some exceptional attacking talent over the years and many have excelled from the penalty spot.

Steven Gerrard currently holds the record for goals scored from 12-yards out for Liverpool having netted 31 during his time in Merseyside.

Current Liverpool star Mohamed Salah isn’t too far behind with 25 to his name though and you’d imagine he’ll only improve on that tally next season.

Former Tottenham star Harry Kane is widely regarded by many as the best penalty-taker in the world at the moment.

The England captain has netted 74 of his 85 penalties in his long career. But his England teammate and current Manchester United star Luke Shaw has claimed a former Liverpool player is actually better from 12 yards out.

Shaw names former Liverpool player as the best penalty taker he’s played with

Speaking to Goal, Shaw was asked for the best penalty taker he’s ever played alongside.

And in what was a surprising choice, he named former Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert after the duo played alongside each other at Southampton.

“My god. Wow,” Shaw said. “There are so many I could go for but I’m going to go for one that people probably wouldn’t think I would pick and that is Rickie Lambert.”

He added: “Because obviously I have the normal ones I could go for but I think Rickie Lambert was unbelievable at penalties, so I would pick him.”

Did Lambert ever take a penalty for Liverpool?

Lambert netted a total of 51 penalties in his career and only missed three, which is quite a remarkable record.

But the English striker never actually took a penalty for Liverpool during normal time in his short spell at Anfield. He did step up in a penalty shootout against Besiktas in the Europa League though but despite netting his effort, the Reds lost 5-4 and crashed out of the competition.

Lambert was snapped up from Southampton back in July 2014 but headed out the door just a year later after a difficult spell at Anfield.

He managed just three goals in 36 appearances for the club. Despite his excellent record from the spot, he was never placed on penalty duty for Liverpool and that was down to Gerrard still being at the club at that point.
