‘Tremendous’ Chelsea player named in best team from second group game at Euro 2024

The European Championships are well underway in Germany, and a number of countries have begun to make their statements.

It has to be said that the tournament so far has not been the ideal scenario as far as the majority of Chelsea players go.

Cole Palmer can somehow not get a single minute for England, while Romelu Lukaku is having a tough time against VAR trying to score his first goal of the tournament.

The Belgian has had three goals ruled out in his opening two games, as their work is not yet done to secure a place in the knockout rounds.

There is one Chelsea player who has been arguably the surprise package of their country’s performances so far.

Marc Cucurella was a late call-up to the Spain side, however has established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet when it comes to the starting lineup right now.

This was shown in hissuperb performance in the 1-0 win over Italy, where he was arguably unfortunate not to be handed the official player of the match award.

However, his showing has now been recognised by the fact he has been named in the WhoScored Team of the Week for Matchday Two of the tournament.

The first gameweek saw players who had actually recently left Chelsea take all the headlines.

N’golo Kante gave everyone a timely reminder of just how good he is when fully fit, whilst Kai Havertz was named in the team of the first matchday after scoring a penalty in the opener against Scotland.

Enzo Maresca will no doubt be keeping a close eye to what is going on in Germany right now, and many will believe that Cucurella is putting in performances right now that suggest he will be starting the season on the pitch at Stamford Bridge ahead of Ben Chilwell.
