O'Neil must think twice about signing long-term Wolves target after he 'struggled' at Euro 2024 - opinion

Wolves are on the hunt for a new striker, however, the performances of one target at Euro 2024 may have encouraged Gary O’Neil to reassess his options.

It’s been a rapid start to the transfer window at Wolves as the Old Gold bid to replenish their squad ahead of 2024/25.

Gary O’Neil guided his side to a 14th-place finish, combatting the club’s schedule with a squad low on depth although, positive changes have already been made.

Wolves have already secured the permanent signing of Tommy Doyle, with Braga winger Rodrigo Gomes also arriving.

Brazilian wonderkid Pedro Lima is in the process of being unveiled as a dazzling option at right-back however, the search for a new striker continues for O’Neil.

Wolves target Che Adams was poor at Euro 2024 for Scotland

Last summer, Wolves attempted to sign Che Adams from Southampton on deadline day, a swoop that was blocked by the Saints.

The Old Gold’s interest has resurfaced this summer as the striker bids to decide on his future after the Euros.

Scotland’s time at the tournament has now ended at the group stages, with Adams’ next steps poised to become clear in the coming weeks, something O’Neil may be tempted to reconsider.

The Euros were dull for Scotland and even more dull for Adams, who had an incredibly underwhelming tournament.

As per Sofascore, the Wolves target had 59 touches over his three appearances, recorded only two shots and missed one big chance, seeing him criticised for his lack of conviction in leading the line.

After Scotland’s elimination following a 1-0 defeat to Hungary, Adams was handed a 4/10 match rating by The Sun, who said the striker ‘struggled’ and ‘posed little threat to goal’.

Gary O’Neil must now question Wolves’ interest in Adams

While O’Neil seems to be an admirer of the Saints striker, his performances at the Euros should have concerned the Wolves boss.

Given that the Old Gold are searching for a reliable number nine, the 27-year-old may not be the right man for the job, seeing his presence in such role questioned at the tournament.

The Scotsman scored 15 goals in the Championship last term to help Southampton reach the Play-Off Final however, his record in the Premier League is far from prolific.

In 124 top-flight appearances, Adams has scored 25 goals, rarely displaying performances that suggest he can be counted on as a reliable Premier League scorer.

From his record in the top tier to his dismal Euro 2024 campaign, O’Neil will surely be sceptical about continuing Wolves’ pursuit of the Saints ace.
