‘He’s in form’: Alex Iwobi says Newcastle have a player who’s absolutely ‘electric’

Eddie Howe isn’t short of talented attacking players at Newcastle United.

The Magpies have proven to be astute in the transfer market since the Englishman’s arrival back in November 2021.

Newcastle have managed to revamp their frontline over the past two and a half years, with Alexander Isak currently their standout man in attack.

But other key signings have arguably gone under the radar and Anthony Gordon is a player who is finally getting the credit he deserves.

The winger arrived for a £45 million fee back in January last year and after a slow start to life at St James’ Park, he established himself as a key man under Eddie Howe last season.

His 21 goal involvements in the Premier League last term was enough to earn him a spot at Euro 2024 with England.

Gordon is yet to play a single minute in Germany but Fulham’s Alex Iwobi believes he’s capable of making a huge impact for the Three Lions.

Iwobi calls for England to hand Anthony Gordon Euro 2024 chance

Iwobi played alongside Gordon during their time at Everton together and is well aware of the winger’s quality.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Fulham star heaped praise on his former teammate and feels Gordon could provide a real goal threat for England.

“If he has an opportunity to do so [play] then I’m sure’ll make an impact because he’s an electric player,” Iwobi said.

“I’ve played with him and he’s definitely a goal threat, he’s been getting goals for Newcastle and he’s in form. If he gets a chance, I’m sure he’ll be hungry to go and take it.”

Gordon deserves England chance

The 23-year-old’s display against Iceland ahead of the tournament led many to believe he could play a prominent role for England this summer.

But after two games played, Gordon is yet to even get an opportunity from the bench.

England are lacking width on the left-hand side and Gareth Southgate’s insistence on playing Phil Foden out wide just doesn’t seem to be working.

Gordon would certainly provide real pace out wide for England and with Newcastle teammate Kieran Trippier at left-back, the duo are likely to have a strong understanding with each other.

With Southgate’s side back in action in their final group game against Slovenia tomorrow night, Gordon will be hoping to get a chance to impress.
