Big Edson Alvarez injury twist comes to light

West Ham United star Edson Alvarez picked up a hamstring injury whilst playing for Mexico two days ago.

Edson Alvarez has firmly established himself as a key player for West Ham, after moving to the London Stadium from Ajax for around £34 million last summer.

In 31 Premier League games for the Hammers last season, the 26-year-old midfield warrior averaged 2.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 2.3 clearances. He made 38.5 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 86.1% (Who Scored).

However, his discipline was a slight concern, after he picked up 11 yellow cards. That said, he did recently admit that he has learned from the mistakes he made in that specific department.

The most impressive thing about Alvarez was how quickly he adjusted to the Premier League, having moved from the far inferior Eredivisie.

That’s not an easy thing to do whatsoever.

Julen Lopetegui will undoubtedly be planning to build his team around Alvarez, given the Mexican’s ability to receive the ball from his defenders in tight areas.

So with that in mind it was a real blow when news of his hamstring injury emerged yesterday…

Big Edson Alvarez injury twist

The 26-year-old Hammers midfielder left he pitch in tears during Mexico’s clash with Jamaica out in Houston in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time.

Hamstring injuries are notoriously delicate to deal with, and recovery times can range anywhere from three weeks all the way up to three months (Mercy Health).

Even if it was a mild hamstring strain, the Hammers star will most likely miss the rest of the Copa America.

However, if it’s a complete muscle tear, he could miss some action for West Ham at the start of the season as well. Losing Alvarez for a sustained period of time would be a disaster for Lopetegui.

So it’s interesting to see the latest update regarding the injury picked up by the former Ajax man.

Fabrizio Romano took to his official X account to provide an in-depth verdict on Edson’s injury.

The Italian journalist said, “Edson Alvarez, out of Copa America due to hamstring injury.”

“West Ham midfielder waiting for results of new tests with staff not expecting a big injury.”

Judging by that claim from Romano, I can’t see Edson Alvarez been out with the hamstring injury for any longer than 3-4 weeks.

Purely from a selfish perspective, that’s good news for West Ham, but still a gutting blow for him and his hopes of helping Mexico achieve Copa America success.

I fully expect to see the midfielder in action for the Hammers during our pre-season campaign, and that’s all that matters to us really isn’t it.
