‘Exceptional’ player is set to have his medical and sign for Aston Villa today - journalist

Aston Villa look set to wrap up another signing imminently as they continue to bolster Unai Emery’s squad.

The Villains have already snapped up Lewis Dobbin from Everton after a busy start to the summer transfer window.

A deal is also in the works for Douglas Luiz to head out the door to join Juventus, with Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea moving the other way to Villa Park.

Talented youngster Omari Kellyman is on the verge of leaving Aston Villa as he nears a switch to Stamford Bridge.

But in a separate deal, Villa are about to snap up their second signing of the summer in Ian Maatsen, with the Dutchman set to undergo his medical.

Maatsen set for Aston Villa medical

Despite the fact that Maatsen is currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, his move to Villa Park looks set to be completed imminently.

With Kellyman heading to Chelsea today to undergo his medical and sign a six-year deal with the Blues, Maatsen is also set to have his medical.

That’s according to BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella, who has shared the latest on Maatsen’s switch from Chelsea to the Midlands.

He wrote: “Omari Kellyman’s medical and contract signing at Chelsea is today. He’s set to sign a six plus one deal – as exclusively revealed – upon moving from Aston Villa.

“Ian Maatsen will also complete a medical moving the other way in a separate deal.”

Champions League proving key for Villa

Despite some initial concerns over the Premier League’s PSR deadline on June 30, Villa have enjoyed a busy start to the summer transfer window.

Ross Barkley’s move to Villa is also imminent and Emery is wasting no time in preparing his side for the Champions League.

The return to Europe’s elite competition also proved to be key in signing Maatsen, should a deal go through as expected.

The ‘exceptional’ full-back had his head turned by interest from the Villains due to the added lure of Champions League football.

Maatsen enjoyed a brilliant second half of the last campaign with Borussia Dortmund and played a key role in their surprise run to the Champions League final.
