Journo who broke Paqueta transfer claims Lopetegui could sign 'next level' 24-yo striker for £25m

So it seems like West Ham United have a genuine chance of signing Jonathan David from Lille this summer.

Let’s be honest, Jonathan David is the type of signing we have all been crying out for at West Ham for years now.

The Hammers tried to sign the 24-year-old last summer, but he remained in France with Lille in the end after we failed to meet the Ligue 1 outfit’s £52 million demands for the striker.

David will now be out of contract with Lille in just 12 month’s time though, and his asking price has plummeted as a result.

The Canada international is an elite forward, and he’s clearly ready to make the big jump up to the Premier League.

The big question though is, where will he be playing his football next season? There’s a good chance that he won’t be at Lille beyond the end of the current transfer window.

The French side will not want to risk losing him on a free transfer next year. However, do West Ham really have a genuine chance of signing David this summer?

West Ham could sign Jonathan David for unbelievable bargain fee

The Lille hitman is a really hot commodity this summer, with numerous clubs chasing his signature.

The Canadian hitman bagged a really impressive 26 goals and nine assists in 47 games in all competitions for Lille last season.

He also has 26 goals in 48 international games for Canada to his name. Now he could be set for a big move to the Premier League.

According to Ben Jacobs – the journalist who was first to break the Lucas Paqueta to West Ham transfer – the Hammers are interested in signing Lille forward Jonathan David this summer.

He could cost just £25 million as well – an unbelievable bargain in this day and age.

However, there are some clear and obvious issues for West Ham…

Jacobs said, “Chelsea, Spurs, Manchester United and West Ham all considering a move for Lille striker Jonathan David, who is expected to be available for €25m-30m.”

“Spurs have had David on their radar for a year. #CFC discussed David during Graham Potter’s spell in charge.”

He might be viewed as excellent value, but the fact that Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United all want the 24-year-old as well will make the Hammers’ task of signing him an extremely hard one.

If Lopetegui does manage to bring him to the London Stadium, what a signing this would be for West Ham – he’d be a huge upgrade on Michail Antonio and would take us to a whole new level.

Canada boss John Hermann raved about the striker, when asked about David and his international teammate Alphonso Davies, as quoted by Canada Soccer Daily:

“They’re bloody good players. They’re next level.”

He’s bang on the money there. He is absolutely rapid and would offer us a completely different dimension to our attacking play.

Jonathan David would take West Ham to another level entirely, there’s no doubt about that. Let’s just hope that we’re able to beat the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United to his signature this summer.
