Report: Whether Kieran Trippier wants to leave Newcastle United this summer

Kieran Trippier is currently focussed on bringing football home at Euro 2024, but his Newcastle United future remains up in the air.

The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his Newcastle United contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2025.

That puts the Magpies in a difficult situation, at a time when they are under pressure to sell due to PSR. From a business perspective, it makes sense to get rid of Kieran Trippier, given his age and contract situation. Those are the reasons why Callum Wilson could depart, with the striker attracting interest from West Ham United.

But Trippier is arguably more important to Newcastle, with the right-back immediately becoming a leader under Eddie Howe when he arrived at St James’ Park in January 2022.

Kieran Trippier wants to stay at Newcastle United

With Wilson in a similar situation, it has been reported that he is open to a move away as he eyes a fresh challenge.

However, that is seemingly not a view that is shared by Trippier.

That is according to the Athletic, who report that Trippier would like to stay at Newcastle United beyond this summer. They add that Eddie Howe feels the same, with the Toon boss eager to retain a player who has had a transformative impact during his two-and-a-half years on Tyneside.

Less need to sell Trippier if Wilson leaves Newcastle

While Trippier wants to stay, Newcastle do need to sell. However, that need will decrease once some players depart.

It looks like Yankuba Minteh will be sold, while there is increasing noise that Wilson could have a new employer ahead of the 2024/25 season.

And if a player like Wilson does go, you have to imagine that Trippier staying will therefore become more likely.

There are plenty of players who the Magpies could move on, but that does not mean they will sell all of them. And Howe will be reluctant to lose a leader like Trippier, especially if he has already said goodbye to a senior player in Wilson.

Euro 2024 is Trippier’s main focus right now

For now, Trippier is only focussed on Euro 2024 with England.

He has played every single minute of the Three Lions’ first two games, having to operate at left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw.

It has been a steady start to the tournament for Trippier, even if England are struggling to gel as a team.

Their next game is on Tuesday evening, with Gareth Southgate’s side facing Slovenia in their final group stage match. A win will see them finish top of the group and advance to the knockout stages.

While it is a busy week at Newcastle United, all Trippier will care about is England – and rightly so. The Athletic add that if the decision is made to sell Trippier, it will not happen until after Euro 2024, anyway.
