‘I always said’: Cesc Fabregas names Liverpool legend as the one player he would have ‘loved to play with’

Liverpool have been fortunate enough to have had many iconic players come and go over the years of their existence.

The likes of Mohamed Salah, Alisson and Virgil van Dijk will be keen to extend that list, with the trio perhaps leading the way for the most significant names in the current side.

Plenty of youngsters will also be eyeing legendary status at Anfield in the years to come, with Trent Alexander-Arnold top of the list for academy graduates at this moment in time.

Keeping such players at the club will be key if new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is to immediately hit the ground running.

The Dutchman has officially been unveiled as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, with Slot’s first interaction with a Liverpool player involving a call with compatriot Van Dijk.

Gerrard has long since left Anfield, but he remains a popular figure, even among opponents, with former Arsenal and Chelsea ace Cesc Fabregas now waxing lyrical over the ex-Liverpool captain.

“He was someone that I looked up to when I was young,” Fabregas told BBC Sport. “When I remember the first times that the Premier League was opening in Spain and we could watch games and he was very young.

“He was stepping into the Liverpool side. I had a Nokia. I remember one of the first phones that I had when I was young was this Nokia that you could change the face of and you could set up the screen.

“And I remember I had Gerrard17 and stuff like that when he was wearing 17 in the beginning, so yeah, I always said that he was one of the players that I would have loved to play with.”

Fabregas lined out for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea during his time on the pitch, with Gerrard loyal to the Reds throughout his playing career in England.

The former skipper enjoyed a lengthy midfield partnership with Fabregas’ compatriot Xabi Alonso, another former player who has since turned to management.

Currently in the dugout at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso has also been reminiscing about Gerrard lately, although the Spaniard opted to rank France legend Zinedine Zidane over the Anfield icon when tasked with choosing his favourite in head-to-head battles between players.

Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq secured a mid-table finish in Saudi, with Alonso’s Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga and Fabregas’ Como promoted to Serie A.
