Celtic hold talks with Middlesbrough's England U18 striker - insider

With most of the transfer chat surrounding Celtic and their need to strengthen the first-team squad, Brendan Rodgers has a bit of work to do this summer to strengthen the team for the new season ahead.

With various positions requiring attention at the club, Rodgers does need to strengthen the goalkeeping area as well as looking to get back up for Kyogo Furuhashi and someone to compete with Greg Taylor for the left fullback position.

The Celtic boss also should be looking for a suitable partner for Cameron Carter-Vickers in the heart of the defence because as well as Liam Scales did last season, he was exposed on several occasions in high-profile games.

But it seems that there is also work going on to help bolster the Celtic youth team as the club has reportedly held talks with an up-and-coming England U18 international striker.

Ajay Matthews speaks to Celtic

Ajay Matthews currently plays for Middlesbrough’s U18 side and has been in great form for the youth side with 16 goals in 17 starts.

And according to X account, The Secret Scout, Celtic alongside Rangers, Southampton, Brighton, Brentford and Newcastle United have not just held talks, but are ‘hopeful’ of signing the 18-year-old striker.

Matthews joined Middlesbrough at the under-9 level and signed his first professional contract with the Championship club in 2023.

Matthews has been tracked by some of the top clubs and was touted for a summer move away fro Teeside back in April of this year.

He has also represented England U17s in the Nordic Cup and scored the winning goal for the U18s in the 4-2 win over Northern Ireland in May this year.

With just over a year left on his deal, it seems that Celtic have made their move for the young Englishman and if successful, is likely to join the Celtic B team.
