N.J. man, 55, drowns in cranberry reservoir in state forest, officials say

A man’s body was recovered from a reservoir in a New Jersey forest over the weekend in the second drowning near the small section of Whiting in Manchester Township.

New Jersey State Park police on Monday said they pulled the body of Frank Guadagnini, 55, of Point Pleasant Borough, from the water in the Whitesbog neighborhood of Pemberton Township in Burlington County.

First responders attempted to revive Guadagnini, police said. Divers from Manchester Township searched the water with help from local police and firefighters after responding around 7:35 p.m. Saturday.

The reservoir is used for cranberry harvesting operations, the most known source of economic activity for Whitesbog, officials said.

No information about the drowning was available Monday, officials said. It was unclear if the Guadianini was accompanied by anyone at the time.

The drowning was at least the third to happen in a large, inland body of water in New Jersey over the weekend.

The reservoir is in the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, the second-largest of New Jersey’s state forests, which spans over 38,000 acres, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

State officials on Monday urged the public to adhere to rules allowing swimming only in designated, guarded areas.

A 33-year-old man died around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. while swimming in Manchester Township at Crystal Lake, a former water-filled mining hole off limits to swimmers. The 7,000-acre lake and the Whitesbog reservoir are about 14 miles apart from each other.

A 79-year-old man’s body was recovered from Lake Hoptacong in Morris County after he entered the water on Saturday evening.
