N.J. man gets 22 years for killing his homeless shelter roommate

A Newark man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for killing his roommate in a homeless shelter in 2022, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said Friday.

Michael Wylie, 33, of Newark was convicted by an Essex County jury on April 4 of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses after he snuck a knife into a homeless shelter in Newark and stabbed his roommate to death, authorities said.

Wylie was staying at the H.E.LP Center on Feb. 5, 2022 when officials said he brought a knife into the shelter and stabbed his roommate, Kevin Williams, in the face, neck and heart.

Wylie was eventually arrested, still in possession of the knife, authorities said.

Wylie must serve 85% of the sentence under the No Early Release Act before becoming eligible for parole. He must also spend an additional five years on supervised release.

Wylie’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
