Report: What 'stunned' Newcastle United during their bid to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton

It looked for all the world that Newcastle United were going to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but now a deal is off.

The Magpies are long-term admirers of the Everton forward, and it finally looked like Eddie Howe was going to get his man this summer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been identified as a replacement for Callum Wilson, and talks really seemed to intensify over the weekend. Newcastle United were confident about reaching an agreement with Everton, while it was reported that the 27-year-old was keen on the move.

But while Calvert-Lewin might be keen, that does not mean he is going to get his wish…

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle transfer called off

News broke on Monday that a deal between Newcastle United and Everton was off. The Toffees’ asking price was deemed unrealistic by Toon officials, who have no intention of paying around £40million for the England international.

In turn, the collapse of this deal has also led to the collapse of Yankuba Minteh’s move the other way. He was interested in signing for Everton, but it now looks like the 19-year-old is going to join Lyon instead.

As for Calvert-Lewin, it is a deal that the Magpies could potentially revisit later in the summer, but only if Everton have a change of heart.

How Newcastle reacted to Everton’s Calvert-Lewin asking price

There have been conflicting stories about exactly how much Everton wanted for Calvert-Lewin, but it would appear that Newcastle were not getting the bargain they had hoped for.

In fact, the Telegraph have reported that Newcastle officials were ‘stunned’ by Everton’s unwillingness to lower their asking price for the forward.

As is the case with 99% of transfers, money is the issue. Everton have asked Newcastle to pay way too much, at a time when finances are delicate due to PSR. Combine that with the fact that Calvert-Lewin is in the final year of his contract and it is no surprise that Newcastle have turned their noses up at Everton’s demands.

Newcastle’s decision will not hurt their PSR position as Yankuba Minteh nears exit

Eddie Howe warned that signing a new striker will be expensive, and Calvert-Lewin has not bucked that trend.

That is why the Magpies have walked away, and it has led to them losing a deal for Yankuba Minteh. He has been identified as the player who is going to leave St James’ Park this week, with Newcastle needing to sell before June 30th to appease PSR.

Fortunately, there are other clubs interested in Minteh. There is likely another deal available to Newcastle, which is probably why the club were willing to walk away from negotiations over Calvert-Lewin, despite knowing it would likely lead to the Minteh deal collapsing as well.

He will probably still depart, with Lyon now in pole position. As for Calvert-Lewin, perhaps he is a player that Newcastle will reignite their interest in later in the window if their striker search continues to be unsuccessful.
