Report shares whether England boss Gareth Southgate will start Phil Foden against Slovenia on Tuesday

Phil Foden will be hoping that England can seal top spot in Group C of the European Championship by defeating Slovenia on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate would have his fingers crossed for the Three Lions to get three points under their belt.

But simultaneously, England need to put in a convincing performance that gives their supporters a confidence boost. So far, the brand of football they have played has been wholly uninspiring.

Despite Foden, Bellingham, Saka and Kane all being in one team, their attack has looked rather toothless.

How likely it is for Phil Foden to start for England against Slovenia

Slovenia come off the back of drawing 1-1 to Serbia. In their tournament opener, Jan Oblak and Co. also drew 1-1 to Denmark.

A challenge Gareth Southgate will have on his hands is picking an XI of players who will finally help his team put on a top display in Germany.

According to a report by The Telegraph, England are not expected to make too many changes to their starting lineup to face Slovenia, with Manchester City technician Foden expected to start.

Only one change is anticipated, with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher expected to take Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place in midfield.

Right decision to keep the faith in Phil Foden

If Gareth Southgate does start Phil Foden against Slovenia, the England boss would be making the right decision.

Critics will argue that the £225,000-a-week man is yet to light up Euro 2024 but a counterargument to that would be not many English attackers have so far.

Secondly, the Manchester City midfielder was England’s biggest goal threat in their 1-1 draw against Denmark; a sign that he is settling into the team as the tournament progresses.

Foden is a match-winner, much like Kane and Bellingham are and despite two underwhelming displays from him, he has the quality and experience to put his stamp on his nation’s upcoming contest.

By potentially starting the 24-year-old, Gareth Southgate’s show of faith could boost the decorated midfielder’s confidence and lead to a major improvement in his performance.
