Wisbech Town defeat Sawston and Babraham 2nds in Cambs and Hunts Premier League Division One

Wisbech Town cricketers got their season back on track with a crucial victory at Sawston and Babraham 2nds on Saturday.

After being left frustrated by a rain-off and a draw at home to bottom-side Old Leysians over the past fortnight, Wisbech made sure there was no slip-up this weekend.

James Williams’ men are now fifth in the Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One after ten games and 100 points from the top after earning 25 points from their latest success.

Gary Freear made a majestic 82 not out as Wisbech Town cricketers returned to winning ways in Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One at the weekend.

After losing the loss and being asked to field, all of the home top-order made runs and Wisbech had to remain patient with the ball.

After finding themselves in a commanding position at 151-3, the hosts lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs as they were bowled out for 172.

Josh Porter was the pick of the bowlers with 3-25 from his 11 overs with George Gowler also picking up 3-33 from 13.

Kieran Haynes 1-48 and Gary Freear 1-2 picked up the other wickets.

The Wisbech reply got off to the worst possible start with James Williams, Josh Bowers, Ryan Clark and Thomas Hoyle all back in the pavilion as the score reached 28.

But a fifth-wicket stand of 118 between the evergreen Freear and Rhys Howell turned the game firmly in Wisbech's favour.

Howell was eventually dismissed for 34 but Freear remained unbeaten on 82 from 157 balls as the visitors reached their target with four wickets to spare.

Winning the toss and fielding first, Wisbech's Mark Buttriss helped himself to 4-33 from his six overs but there was no stopping the visiting battling line-up who posted 275-7 from their 40 overs.

March Town 3rds fell just short of victory against Over and Willingham in CCA Junior League 5 North.
