Leeds United should rival Victor Orta in ambitious move to sign £20m Liverpool player - opinion

Hull City were arguably one of the most-impressive teams in the Championship last season alongside Leeds United, given their lack of budget and pre-season prediction.

The top four ran away with the league and deserved to be where they were in the table. But in terms of over-exceeding your means, blowing away predictions and installing a style on a budget, Hull were there.

Under Liam Rosenior, the Tigers went until the last day before being cruelly denied a play-off spot. That inexplicably lead to the sacking of Rosenior, who has since been linked with Sunderland and Burnley.

Rosenior created a side that denied Leeds away from home, before taking The Whites all the way until the final few minutes at Elland Road. Lewie Coyle, a Thorp Arch academy product, was crucial to the side.

But so was on-loan Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton, who joined Hull with the belief that he is a holding player but really, he is so much more than that. The 21-year-old had a hand in eight goals in 41 games.

Victor Orta wants to sign £20m-rated Tyler Morton this summer

Morton has now returned to parent club Liverpool where he finds himself the centre of plenty of interest going into 2024-25. It is likely that Arne Slot will want to take a look at him, and possibly keep Morton.

A report from The Times states that Leipzig, Slot’s old side Feyenoord and Victor Orta’s Sevilla want to sign Morton, who is rated at £20m. But Liverpool would surely prefer to keep a talent like him on board.

Instead, it might better suit The Reds to send him back out on loan to a Premier League side or even a promotion-cashing Championship side for Morton to continue to grow as his reputation rises.

Leeds should try ambitious loan move for Liverpool’s Morton

On paper, Leeds are not stretched in the middle of the park. Darko Gyabi is back after a loan and Leeds now have Archie Gray, Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev as options ahead of the 2024-25 term.

But, Gruev and Gray are attracting interested and with the teenager playing in defence for much of last term with Ampadu, it might be that another central midfielder is required if they stay in the back line.

If Liverpool want to keep Morton and get the best out of him, another loan at a club like Leeds would do him wonders. Leeds would get themselves a Premier League-ready midfielder, perfect for Daniel Farke.
