Chelsea now targeting move for English left-back Leeds had been ‘pushing’ to sign in December - journalist

Leeds United had been keen on strengthening their options at left-back in January and one of their former targets is now wanted by Chelsea.

The Whites headed into the winter window with a new left-sided defender at the top of their wish list until Junior Firpo was finally able to overcome his injury issues and make the position his own.

In the end, Leeds instead moved to strengthen the other side of their defence as Connor Roberts joined on loan from Burnley as a replacement for the outbound Djed Spence and Luke Ayling.

Before deciding against bringing one in, Leeds were linked with a number of potential new left-backs including Josh Doig and Borna Barisic.

Doig ended up making the switch to Sassuolo where he was relegated from Serie A in May, while Barisic stayed at Rangers to see out the remainder of his contract, and is now a free agent.

Chelsea eyeing move for former Leeds target Archie Brown

However, it is one of Leeds’ other winter left-back targets who is seemingly on the radar of Chelsea, and more specifically BlueCo.

BlueCo is the consortium led by much maligned Chelsea owner Todd Boehly among others, which was formed as part of the investment vehicle for the takeover of the Blues back in 2022.

The company is also in charge of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg and the clear link allows for quick and easy transfer business between the two clubs, as seen by the loans of youngster Ângelo Gabriel and Andrey Santos last season.

And according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, BlueCo are now keen on signing Gent left-back Archie Brown as part of their strategy of growing players at Strasbourg to potentially ready them for the future at Chelsea.

It is said Brown is now an ‘important target’ for the Blues but will face competition from another Ligue 1 side in Lyon, and a deal could be done for around £6.8 million.

Leeds had been pushing for Brown deal

Brown has been on the radar of a number of English clubs for several months now, with Leeds, Burnley and Everton holding an interest.

At one stage, it was even reported that Leeds were pushing harder for a deal than any other side, though a move never materialised and he has remained at Gent since.

Despite playing in Belgium, Brown is actually English and spent time at Derby County earlier in his career, before moving to Swiss side Lausanne and then Gent to further his development.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds do try go back in for Brown this summer but at the figures BlueCo are likely to be able to offer, it is hard to see.
