West Ham seriously keen to sign £17m forward compared to Mohamed Salah as talks now begin - journalist

West Ham have now initiated contact to sign a Canadian player as Tim Steidten aims to improve Julen Lopetegui’s attacking department.

The chances of a deal materialising are seemingly high – as the Hammers have been told the player in question is likely to move to the Premier League.

So, who have West Ham now made contact to sign? Let’s take a look…

West Ham make contact to sign Jonathan David

Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany has now revealed that West Ham have been in touch with Lille to ask about the availability of Jonathan David.

The Canada international is likely to join a Premier League club this summer, and could be signed for as little as €20m (£17m) – due to the fact he only has 12 months remaining on his contract.

Plettenburg states that West Ham are “seriously interested” in David – although the Irons face competition from Chelsea and Manchester United.

TBR Football understand that Tottenham are also very keen to secure the 24-year-old’s signature.

David enjoyed a fantastic 2023/24 campaign with Lille, scoring 26 goals – while also providing nine assists – in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Hammers could sign the new Mohamed Salah

Interestingly, the 24-year-old has been compared to Liverpool No.11 Mohamed Salah.

It was Smarterscout who made the comment, specifically mentioning David’s ability to score a large variety of goals, and finish from many different areas, as comparable traits to the prolific Egypt international.

If the Canadian can emulate even 50% of what Salah has achieved in England – where he has remarkably scored 211 goals in 349 appearances for Liverpool – this potential £17m deal could prove to be one of West Ham’s best signings ever.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation – however – as Steidten clearly needs to fend off some fierce competition if he is to bring David to the London Stadium this summer…
