'Carries that stigma': Simon Jordan just cannot see Newcastle signing £40m player this summer

Newcastle United already have an injury prone striker in Callum Wilson, and Simon Jordan has queried why they would want to sign another.

The Magpies look set to be in the market for a forward this summer, with Callum Wilson seen as likely to leave St James’ Park.

That makes sense, as he is 32-years-old and entering the final year of his contract. On top of that, fitness continues to be a major concern, with Wilson missing 25 games last season.

But if Newcastle do let their number nine go then they will need to sign a replacement. Another striker will have to arrive, otherwise Alexander Isak will be the club’s only forward for the entire campaign.

Newcastle pull out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal

That is why the Magpies have been chasing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and were actually confident about signing the 27-year-old.

However, that deal is now off, with Newcastle stunned by Everton’s unwillingness to sell him for less than their £40million asking price. That fee was deemed too much for the Magpies, especially for a player who has just one year left on his current deal at Goodison Park.

Eddie Howe’s side have walked away, but it would not be a shock if they reignited their interest later in the summer given his contract situation.

Simon Jordan comments on Newcastle’s interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin

However, it is a deal that TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan cannot see happening, simply because of Calvert-Lewin’s history with injury.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a decent player, he had a decent season a while ago,” he said.

“If you can get £40million for him, that would be fantastic. If I was in Dyche’s shoes, I would want to sell him and his handbag.

“The reality of it is that I just don’t see him going to Newcastle. I mean, Callum Wilson is injured. Do you want to buy another player that carries that stigma all the time?”

In defence of Calvert-Lewin’s fitness

At £40million, Newcastle are right to stay away. However, it would be a different story if the fee was much lower.

While there would certainly be reservations over Calvert-Lewin given his history with injuries, it has not been as much of a problem for him over the past 12 months. His fitness woes could be behind him, with the 27-year-old only missing seven games last season.

Calvert-Lewin was available for Everton more than Wilson was for Newcastle, and the belief on Tyneside is that Eddie Howe could get more out of DCL if he were to make the move to the North East.

That is positive, as his goal record in recent years is more worrying than his injury record. Across the last three seasons, Calvert-Lewin has only scored 15 goals in total. That is not good enough, and it is why, combined with his injuries, Newcastle fans have not been enthused about him arriving.

For now, it does not look like Calvert-Lewin will be arriving. The Newcastle deal is off, with the Magpies taking their striker search elsewhere.
