'Could be revived': Newcastle could still make late move for £37m player if things change - journalist

Newcastle United’s move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin is off – for now.

The Magpies have been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a long time, but it finally felt like a deal was going to be done this summer.

Talks with Everton intensified over the weekend, with Newcastle United confident that they were going to sign a striker who they think can get much better under Eddie Howe. It was also reported that Calvert-Lewin was keen on the move, with all roads leading towards him arriving at St James’ Park.

However, that is no longer the case. It has emerged that a deal is now off, with Newcastle walking away from negotiations with Everton and ending their pursuit of Calvert-Lewin. In turn, that means that Yankuba Minteh is not on his way to Goodison Park, despite Merseyside being the 19-year-old’s preferred destination.

What could happen later this summer as Newcastle United pull out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal

It is a major shock to see the Calvert-Lewin deal collapse, as all the noise suggested that a move to Newcastle United was very much on.

But now it is off, and the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has taken to X to explain why Calvert-Lewin is not signing for Newcastle United right now, before suggesting that this might not be the end of the Magpies’ interest.

He wrote on X: “Newcastle United have pulled out of talks for Everton striker Dominic Calvert Lewin as reported by @SkySports_Keith. Looks like Minteh will now be heading to Lyon as a result. Everton asking price deemed totally unrealistic by #nufc. A deal that could be revived later in the summer but not at fee quoted.”

Newcastle make the correct transfer decision

With Calvert-Lewin deemed to be too expensive, Newcastle have walked away. That is a sensible decision given it has been claimed that Everton wanted as much as £37million.

That is way more than what Newcastle should be paying for a player who has struggled in recent years and has just one year left on his contract, so Toon officials are right to walk away.

However, that does not mean they are no longer interested in Calvert-Lewin. He is a long-term target for the Magpies, and obviously a player who Eddie Howe would like to work with. That is why Luke Edwards has suggested that this deal could be revisited later in the summer, but only if Everton lower their asking price.

They might have to do that because of his contract situation. Calvert-Lewin’s current Everton deal expires in 2025, meaning that his value is decreasing day by day. And given their financial situation, Everton dare not let a player of his calibre leave for free.

A new contract is unlikely at the moment, which may give Newcastle the chance to reignite this deal later in the summer if the situation remains the same.

For Newcastle, they will take their striker search elsewhere in the meantime. If they are unable to find someone, perhaps they will go back in for Calvert-Lewin in the hope that his asking price has decreased.

Lyon likely to land Yankuba Minteh

Edwards also believes that Lyon are now the most likely club to sign Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United.

Even though his move to Everton is off, a transfer away from St James’ Park remains on the agenda. That is very important for Toon officials, as it looks like Minteh has been identified as the player who can solve the club’s PSR problem.

While supporters do not want Minteh to leave, it looks like an exit is inevitable for a player who has never represented the Magpies. That is such a shame, but it will be more palatable if the teenager joins a club further afield, rather than a Premier League rival.
