How many players Aston Villa must lose if they are to avoid any PSR breaches

Concerns over Aston Villa breaching PSR during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign have dominated supporter’s concerns.

In 2023, Villa suffered nearly a £120 million loss, one of the highest in Europe. Over the course of the last year, the Premier League has cracked down on sides breaking the rules, with particular attention given to PSR.

Both Everton and Nottingham Forest breached the rules which resulted in sanctions. As a result, many of the Villa Park faithful were fearful that this could soon happen to them.

Despite qualifying for the Champions League, it was clear that Villa needed to raise money through the transfer market before the deadline at the end of June.

However, it is now believed that one departure could be enough to save the Birmingham outfit from a points deduction for the upcoming season.

One departure that is set to be confirmed in the coming days is Douglas Luiz’s transfer to Juventus.

Villa’s midfield maestro has been sensational throughout his time at Villa Park and played a major role in turning the club into a Champions League outfit.

There were concerns from the Villa Park faithful that this transfer would not be enough to pass PSR despite the additional fee.

However, Birmingham Mail has confirmed that upon the conclusion of Douglas Luiz’s transfer this month, the additional income will be enough to ensure Villa pass PSR ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The midfielder is set to depart to Italy for £20 million with Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea coming the other way.

This means that the club should not suffer any points deductions for a breach, similar to what happened to Everton and Nottingham Forest last season.

On top of this, the article adds that ‘any other further transfers will be part of the club’s football strategy’. Therefore, the potential departure of Omari Kellyman to Chelsea has not been dedicated by any potential PSR breaches.

While Unai Emery has been leading the players on the pitch, behind the scenes the president of footballing operations has carefully been spinning the transfer market to his will.

After the nearly £120 million loss in 2023, there were fears that multiple of Villa’s stars could be forced to leave to avoid a breach. However, Luiz’s departure to set to end any fears with the club given two exciting new talents in return.

Since coming in last summer, Monchi has helped set up a club that isn’t just successful on the pitch but is also financially attuned.

If Villa are to stay among the top clubs in the Premier League, fans will have Monchi to thank just as much as Emery.
