Report: Ange Postecoglou has very 'high hopes' for £70k-a-week Tottenham player who could explode next season

There is a lot of excitement about Ange Postecoglou’s second season at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs appointed the Australian as their new boss before the start of the 2023/24 campaign. He instantly transformed the atmosphere in and around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A fantastic start to the season for Postecoglou’s side was hit with multiple injuries. That, combined with some terrible form at the business end of the season which saw them win just two of their last seven games, cost them a place in the top four.

Every Tottenham fan is expecting a better campaign in the 2024/25 season, and we’re sure Postecoglou will demand nothing less.

Ahead of the new campaign, Postecoglou is said to have ‘high hopes’ for one particular player.

What Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham feel about Brennan Johnson

Tottenham signed Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 for £47.5 million (Sky Sports).

A few eyebrows were raised about the price tag at the time, but Postecoglou was adamant that he wanted to sign the Wales international. Tottenham sealed the deal on summer transfer deadline day.

In his debut campaign in North London, Johnson played 34 games for Spurs in all competitions, scored five goals and provided 10 assists.

That’s not a bad return at all considering it was his first year at the club, but there is still a lot of room for improvement in the coming years.

Football London have had their say on what they know about Johnson.

It has been claimed that Postecoglou has ‘high hopes’ for the attacker in the upcoming campaign. Many people inside Spurs also believe he is ‘going to improve’ on what he produced in his debut season.

If Johnson can go from 15 direct goal contributions to over 20 in the 2024/25 campaign, it will be a very successful season for him.

What Postecoglou has already predicted about Johnson

Johnson only turned 23 after the end of the 2023/24 season.

The £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) Wales international is still very young, and 15 direct goal contributions in his debut season at Tottenham is a very impressive return.

However, Tottenham fans haven’t seen the best of Johnson yet. There’s still a lot to come from the versatile attacker, and Postecoglou knows that very well.

The Spurs boss, while talking about Johnson in April, predicted that the Welshman will become a ‘super player’ for Tottenham in the coming years.

He said: “He’s found a bit of confidence and consistency and understanding of how we play and he’s getting the rewards. But he’s still a young guy.

“There’s definitely a lot more in him, and when you see improvement that encourages us. He’s going to be a super player for us.”
