Report: £20m Liverpool player wants to impress Arne Slot in pre-season after rumours he could leave Anfield

Liverpool have some decisions to make around their squad as their players continue to attract interest.

The Reds find themselves in a bit of a transitional period having seen Jurgen Klopp replaced by Arne Slot this summer.

The change in coach is not the only thing to be different at Anfield this summer, though. FSG have brought Michael Edwards back to the club along with new sporting director Richard Hughes.

All of the upheaval doesn’t necessarily have to affect the Liverpool squad. However, it does inevitably lead to questions over exactly how much change we could see amongst the playing staff.

One of those with a serious question to answer this summer is academy graduate Tyler Morton. With interest swirling around Morton, it feels like a big few months for him.

Tyler Morton attracting European interest

Morton has been slowly building into an excellent prospect. The 21-year-old already looked the part when Klopp gave him a first-team debut back in 2021.

Three years on and Morton has taken in two very good loan spells, the latest seeing him earn rave reviews at Hull City.

Also now an established England U21 international, it’s clear that Morton is going places.

Obviously, this is grand news for Liverpool either way. On the one hand they could have a midfielder now ready for the first-team, on the other they have an asset who could gather a big-ish transfer fee.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have not yet decided which one Morton will be under Slot.

That decision perhaps isn’t helped by the fact that the former Blackburn Rovers loanee is reportedly being monitored by a number of interesting sides.

RB Leipzig, Sevilla, Eintracht Frankfurt and Feyenoord are four clubs named as being ‘among Morton’s suitors.’ Should he go, Liverpool are claimed to value Morton at around £20m.

But despite some incredibly fascinating options for him, Morton himself is still said to be focused on impressing Slot in pre-season at Liverpool.

Liverpool must make Tyler Morton decision

It should not be a surprise that Morton is attracting clubs of the level of some of those mentioned by The Athletic.

He has been magnificently consistent as a starter for two different Championship clubs and Morton now looks ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Data put Morton as one of the most press resistant midfielders in the world back in February and Liverpool would be wise to properly assess him in pre-season.

While Slot does have plenty of midfielders in his first-team squad, there is still an opening for a natural defensive midfielder. Although this is not exactly his game, Morton could still be moulded into that.

If the new coaching team decide that Morton is not quite what they’re looking for though, then they should move him on.

Another loan would not really do anyone any good at this point, and should someone meet the asking-price, the fee is an enticing one for Liverpool. Morton himself seems like the model pro and it’s great to hear that he’s determined to make it at Anfield. But his destiny could lie elsewhere.
